This year, the British musicologist Dr. Ian Payne will be honoured with the Georg Philipp Telemann Prize of the state capital Magdeburg. The award will be presented by Magdeburg's Lord Mayor Simone Borris at a ceremony in the Gesellschaftshaus Magdeburg on 5 March 2023.
With the award of the Georg Philipp Telemann Prize, the state capital of Magdeburg honours the special achievements of Dr. Ian Payne as an editor of instrumental chamber music by Georg Philipp Telemann and as an author of scholarly studies on this group of works. Based on his passion for Telemann's work, his work reveals an eager desire to discover unpublished Telemann works or those no longer available on the music market, to re-edit them for musical performance and to publish them in printed form. Dr. Payne is the initiator and spiritus rector of the series "Severinus Urtext Telemann Edition" (SUTE), published since 1995 by Severinus Press in Hereford, England. "Ian Payne combines musicological work, editorial competence, editorial activity and publishing know-how in an exemplary manner in over 120 individual editions. Various studies on the insights gained in the editing process distinguish him as an expert analyst. With his well-founded work in the field of editing, he has considerably facilitated access to the instrumental works of Georg Philipp Telemann worldwide – equally for musicology and even more so for music practice," the Board of Trustees for the Telemann Prize acknowledges.
Ian Payne's editions are also popular in Magdeburg: It is impossible to imagine the concerts of the Magdeburger Telemann Festtage and the Sonntagsmusiken without them, as well as in connection with the preparation for the International Telemann Competition.
Biographical information on the prizewinner
Ian Payne, born in 1955, lives and works in England. An alumnus of Exeter University (B.A. 1977, M.A. 1982), he received his doctorate from Cambridge University in 1991 with a thesis on archival records relating to sacred music in Cambridge colleges and selected English cathedral churches in the 16th and 17th centuries. Ian Payne has been General Editor of Severinus Press since 1991. In addition, he taught music theory, history and practice for nearly twenty years, first at British sixth-form colleges, then with The Open University. Briefly, in 1987-8, he also served as temporary archivist at Loughborough University, after qualifying there as a Librarian. In addition to Telemann research, his main scholarly interest is in early English sacred and secular vocal and consort music.
In 1979 Ian Payne was awarded the Stewart and Prout Prize by the University of Dublin (Trinity College) for the best final-year’s examination results for the Bachelor in Music degree (First Class). On the basis of his musicological contribution to the field of cultural heritage research, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (chartered 1751) in 1994.
Background to the award ceremony
Since 1987, the City of Magdeburg has annually honoured outstanding achievements in the interpretation, care and research of Telemann's life and work with the Georg Philipp Telemann Prize. It consists of a bronze plaque, a certificate and an endowment of 2,500 euros.
Those honoured with the prize so far include Ludwig Güttler, Martin Ruhnke, Wolf Hobohm, Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Austria), René Jacobs (Belgium), Klaus Mertens, Dorothee Oberlinger, Elizabeth Wallfisch (Great Britain), the Bärenreiter-Verlag, the Carus-Verlag, the Amadeus-Verlag Winterthur (Switzerland), Burkhard Schmilgun as well as the CD label cpo (Georgsmarienhütte) and Thomaskantor a.D. Gotthold Schwarz. In 2022, Prof. Dr. Steven Zohn (USA) was awarded the Georg Philipp Telemann Prize.
